Top 10 Electric Mountain Bikes of 2020

Okay, folks. I hope you're sitting down because this blog post is intense. With another passing decade, the better part of humanity has discovered the eighth wonder of the world: Electric Mountain Bikes. The power of demand has improved supply, and the biggest companies in the game continue to raise the bar for what can only be the best ride around a mountain you've ever had. In just a year, we've seen the introduction of a 750 Wh battery, the beloved Bosch Gen 4 motor system, a sleeker, more light-weight chassis, and an evolution of added premium components that drive you to your peak performance. Put simply, we've never seen eMTBs looking this good. We've ridden them all, at Fly Rides, and narrowed down 2020's most impressive debuts. So here you have it, in no particular order: the gnarliest, most powerful, long-lasting, user-friendly, trail-ready eMTBs of 2020.

Bulls E-Stream Evo Am 4

First up, is the king of range, the 2020 Bulls E-Stream EVO AM 4. What defines this bike is the torque-teeming Brose Drive S Mag motor, and the SuperCore 750 Wh battery that will charge this baby through the roughest of terrains with no intentions of stopping. For a moderate price, you're getting premium components, like Shimano Deore XT hydraulic disc brakes, Shimano drivetrain, 2.8" Schwalbe Hans Dampf Speedgrip tires, Fox 36 Rhythm Float Boost Fork and a Fox Float DPS Performance Shock with 150mm travel, and a handy Monkey Link system for commuting. With suspension like this, and geometry made for comfort, it's hard to hop off the saddle. Not to mention, it takes you up steep hills with the confidence of a crazy person. The Brose Drive S Mag motor is light and powerful, giving you impressive torque right out-the-gate and responsive delivery per your cadence. Brose didn't call it "Flex Power Mode" for nothin'. Fly Rides' own Scott Nickley took this model out for a spin himself, reporting seamless climbs, generous suspension travel, solid brakes, and newfound confidence.

Pivot Shuttle Team XTR

To follow is an enduro bike with the suspension you didn't know you needed until they gave it to you- it's Pivot Cycles' Pivot Shuttle Team XTR. With a light carbon-fiber chassis, every component has been precisely added to maintain the feel of an effortless ride, without the clunk and bulk. We're talking a powerful Shimano Steps E8000 motor, a Shimano XTR 12-speed drivetrain with a huge gear ratio for smooth non-electronic shifting, and a Shimano battery thats rated for 1000 recharges. I can't not mention the star player here: Dave Weagle's DW-Link patented suspension design. On this model you're getting a Fox Performance 36 fork with 160mm travel, and a rear shock from Fox Performance Float. Both are purposefully placed for ultimate rider control, without the bob or "squat" from most eMTBs' alternative configurations. The Pivot Shuttle Team XTR gives you excellent traction and unbelievable control downhill, no matter how rocky your horizon looks. Adding to its nimble nature is a set of 2.4" Maxxis Minion tires on 29" wheels, for easy corner carving. Lastly, you're set to ride with a Super Boost Plus 157 rear hub to increase your stiffness by 30%. With such great suspension and premium components amid the drivetrain, this eMTB stands to compete with higher-market bikes, for a smarter price point.

Cube Stereo Hybrid 140 HPC Race

We all dream of a low cost eMTB that performs like its expensive friends. With this breakout eMTB from Cube's 2020 lineup, low price point meets premium components. The Stereo Hybrid 140 HPC Race is complete with the beloved Bosch Gen 4 motor, RockShox 35 Gold fork and Deluxe shock, and Shimano disk brakes with 203 mm rotors up front for extra stopping power. Taking this model uphill is effortless with Bosch's out-the-gate torque, and your descents feel as though you could nearly glide across the rocks and bumps ahead. Endure the terrain like no other; this is a great bike for beginners and intermediates alike. What I love about this model and the rest of the 2020 lineup is Cube's attention to integration. Components like the push-button release hidden lock, Bosch battery system, and remote dropper post are all seamlessly incorporated within the design. Added features include 35mm Stanchions, Debonair Air Spring, SRAM NX Eagle Derailer, and a set of 29" wheels with 2.6" Nobby Nic tires.

Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 HPC ActionTeam 27.5

Are you a professional athlete? Doesn't matter. You're riding the eMTB of one. This baby's been race tested, team issued, and decked out with the elements of a beast. Contrary to its name, the Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 HPC ActionTeam comes with a full 170mm of travel for limit-pushing suspension. Top that with a Fox 36 Float fork and Float Factory shock, and you can absorb just about anything. Again, you've got an excellent drivetrain and brake system from Shimano, plus another fat set of Schwalbe's 2.6" tires- perfect for picking up the speed while maintaining control. This enduro bike wouldn't be complete without the Bosch Gen 4 motor and 625 wh battery, plus premium features like a Fox Factory seat post and Cube's semi-integrated seat clamp. So take a long, long, long, long, long, long trip; your chariot awaits.

Specialized Turbo Levo Comp

Specialized really did something special here with their 2020 Levo lineup. I'm talkin' brand new battery with 40% more capacity, a specially tuned Brose motor, and a lighter aluminum frame that was built trail-ready. Did I say the word special too much? Well, for the same cost as the 2019 lineup, the Specialized Turbo Levo Comp is special. Inspired by the Stumpjumper and complete with progressive geometry, kinematics, and integrated design for its components, Specialized continues to raise the bar in what's considered standard for the eMTB game. Specialized created an unbelievable M5 premium aluminum chassis with patented True Trail Geometry, fine-tuned their 2.1 motor, added a 700wh battery pack, and plopped on some 2.3" butcher tires for good measure. To boot, you've got a solid fork and rear shock from RockShox to see you through the mountain with grace.

Specialized Turbo Kenevo Expert

If it feels as though you're being hoisted up into the air, through the breeze, along the mountain's edge by the arms of many cherubs, it's because you're riding the 2020 Specialized Turbo Kenevo Expert. Ascents are just that easy with the Specialized 2.1 custom trail-tuned motor and their lighter, keenly designed chassis that was built for maximum control and minimal frame flex. It wouldn't be so easy without the full 180mm of suspension you're getting from the RockShox Boxxer Select RC and DebonAir Boost. It doesn't matter how long you ride either, because, again, you're covered with the 700wh battery pack they've so slyly integrated into the model's down tube. I also dig that Specialized's eMTBs come with a Mission Control app and Turbo Range Calculator so you can navigate with ease and plan ahead to see just how many miles of battery you have left. At the end of the day, what makes this eMTB so special is that it rips you through the trail like it cares. The Sidearm design brings all three mounting points of the rear shock to connect directly to the M5 Premium Aluminum frame- which also boasts an extra long cockpit and low center of gravity. This True Trail Geometry helps you dance through the rough, instead of eating it.

Haibike xDuro Full Fatsix 10.0

Haibike is calling this the "Traction Miracle." It's an SUV, reimagined as an eMTB. Features include 4" fat tires, a 120mm RockShox fork, and a powerhouse set of TRP Trail S disk brakes. There's no skidding, and no surface you can't cover with comfort. The lightweight rear shock was uniquely designed with a 'Pedal' function to keep it in place as you pedal, plus its air adjustable with the capacity to set to the rider's weight. An SRAM SX Eagle 11-50t gear set supplies the widest range yet with quietly precise shifts, so that no climb or descent is off-limits. Haibike optimized response and power with a Yamaha PW X-2 motor system providing 80Nm torque, and they've extended your capacity with a 500wh battery. It's play-time, baby, and you can go wherever you'd like because you've got comfort, grip, and control on your side.

Superdelite Mountain

Did I save the best for last? Maybe. Riese & Muller really outdid themselves this year with their line of Superdelite models. All come with a sleek dual-battery system for 1000wh of pure power, and Bosch's acclaimed Gen 4 motor system is teeming with the stamina you need for a long haul. The 2020 Superdelite Mountain Touring bike boasts premium components front to back- like full suspension from Fox Float with 150mm travel, a Shimano drivetrain, and powerful Magura disk brakes. All of this is held within a geometrically-sound frame handmade in Taiwan or Portugal. Riese & Muller are known for their devotion to customer comfort and satisfaction, so that's why the elevated performance with their patented Control Technology comes as no surprise. It's a Single Pivot Full Suspension System that ensures far less pedal-bob than other types of suspension, giving you less maintenance and more comfort. Your shifting is smooth as ever with a wide-range Rohloff hub, and you're firing off with 75 Nm of torque. So...a sleek-as-ever integrated battery, full suspension, powerful blast off, and seamless shifting. Any questions as to why you shouldn't own this bike? None? I thought so! Fly Rides loves Riese & Muller because they are shamelessly devoted to you, so treat yourself and hop on the bandwagon.
