How to Lubricate Your Electric Bike's Chain

Keeping your chain lubricated is incredibly important not only for the long term health of the chain, but for the longevity of your entire drivetrain. The stakes are much higher than just needing to replace your rusty chain. Having to replace your entire drivetrain can cost hundreds or thousands. That's why Hector is going to show you how to lubricate your chain. Improve your shifting and overall ride experience by avoiding a squeaky, clunky chain out on the trails or roads.

Getting Prepped to Lube Your Chain

Ideally, before lubing your chain, you want to degrease the chain and clean it and dry it. However, you may not always be able to do that. For example, you may be out on the trail or out on the road.

  • You'll know it's time to lubricate your chain when it's starting to squeak or your shifting is impaired.
  • To start, lift your bike up off the ground so you can properly spin the wheel. You can do this by having your friend hold up the back wheel.
  • You can flip the bike upside down, or put it on a bike stand.
  • I like to find the missing link on the chain and start from there. This way you know where you started, and you can end there as well.

Applying the Lube to Your Chain

Next, grab your lube. To move the chain, spin the crank arms and apply one drop of lube to each chain link.

  • You want to make sure each drop of lube penetrates every link and roller.
  • After you've finished applying the lube, continue to spin the crank arms so that the lubricant can fall into every nook and cranny of the chain. Continue this for at least ten seconds.
  • Once this is done, simply take a clean rag, and wipe off any excess lubricant on the chain. You want to do this so that you don't attract extra dirt or grime when on the trail or on the road.

Now that you've finished, you can ride with pride knowing that you have extended the life of your drivetrain.
